Hyderabad Blasts

I have just got back home from my office at Bowenpally in Secunderabad and have realized that there has been an explosion at Lumbini Park in Hyderabad.

Thanks to a lengthy chat that I had with my colleague Arkss I was delayed at work and therefore hitched a ride with RP up to Himayatnagar. I then happened to take the route via Koti where 15-20 minutes earlier there was another blast. This time at the well-known Gokul Chat.

While there I happened to interact with someone who was at the site when the blast took place and he mentioned that there could have been at least 20-25 people who took a direct hit and lost their lives. He talked about how people (shopkeepers, shoppers etc.) swung into action and put the injured into autorickshaws and sent them to the Gandhi and Osmania hospitals.

By the time I was walking past the site the Fire Tenders had arrived and the police had cordoned off the area. Yet I noticed that Ambulances were finding it difficult to get through because of the dense traffic and also because the bloody ordinary Hyderabadi refuses to give way even to an Ambulance. I noticed a couple of the Ambulances getting caught even as I was traveling towards Koti but obviously, at that point, did not know the gravity of the issue.

While I was at the accident site (at the time of writing it is still not clear if the blast at Gokul Chat was caused by a cylinder explosion or by a bomb blast) I noticed that the police had more or less gained control over the situation.

But what really saddened me was the behaviour of some of the people at the site. While at the time that I passed by Gokul Chat there was not much the general citizen could have done to help the injured, surely there was no need to block the other side of the road and gawk as if there was a film-shooting going on.

This crowd was also impeding the free flow of traffic that caused a traffic pile up at the Koti Women’s College end leading to a further delay in Ambulances traveling from the Chaderghat side getting to the spot.

That we don’t do much to help our fellow citizen is bad enough (I am obviously including myself here) but if we are the reason why a badly injured person can’t be taken to hospital in double quick time then there is a problem somewhere in the way we as a community/nation behave.

I know that this post is fairly disjointed but then again I have probably not been as disturbed as I am now.

My heart goes out to the families of the victims many of whom cannot possibly be identified right away and hope they somehow find the strength to deal with this tragedy. And I really really hope that the number of fatalities does not rise over night.

But seriously this has put in perspective a lot of things for me. If I had walked past that place 20 minutes earlier then I too would have been lying in a pool of blood. And there I was an hour earlier, in office, talking about my future.
As if I control anything.

i think this is revenge attack.
may be by terrorists to avenge the hyderabad masjid blast in may 2007.
if yes, they will be captured and questioned for atleast 15 years.
like the coimbatore blasts.
then our politicians, esp. Congress (I), Communists will go to the Prison and try to get some Sympathy from them
Some IDIOT CM will announce 10% reservation for them
Some CHACHAR commission will announce further reservation in education, jobs, loans etc., etc..
India needs REAL men who can stand up to the TRUTH and face the people and secure them.
Not like VOTE BANK beggars who will kow tow to Terrorism, coax the BLOOD THIRSTY people and further lead INDIA to shame.
I think Indians are more SAFER in USA, UK, AUSTRALIA where the TERRORIST THUGS are raided naked and castrated so that they can never strike back.
India too needs a CRUSADE…
Who can come?

This is really shocking. We have to look in to the root cause of this. Two days later every body will forget . The TV channels will be busy with bail petitions of Sanjay and Salman.

It is unfortunate what happened, especially given the general public who are just enjoying their evening. I have wonderful memories of Gokul Chat growing up in Hyderabad. So its shocking and felt a punch in my gut. I remember going there with my brother and friends all the time. I am not sure if I should be happy that I am in US or be sad that I am so far away (I don't necessarily agree with the other post about indians more safe in other countries, these days its happening everywhere).
I just hope there won't be people trying to use this incident for their advantage (I am unrealistic, I know!). I pray for all the families and friends affected by the incident.

I think we are paying for the 60 years of misrule we have encouraged in the name of democracy. We should stop running separate hostels and schools for Muslims and others on religion and on caste basis and should allow children to learn to grow in oneness. These places are becoming easy platforms for those who wish to destroy society. We cannot change those who are already on the wrong path. But we can at least stop the next generation from taking a wrong path. Only if we change our attitudes and policies.

"India needs REAL men" real MEN?????????!!!!!! I've never heard a more sexist remark!! and anonymous, i think you are rather overreacting!!! Yes, it is a very horrible incident( i have a lot of friends in hyderabad, even my ex lives there!! so i am not someone totally unaffected by this!!)But still, you could do with some control.

whoever did this are the worst cowards in the world! if they had any sort of courage, they wouldn't stoop down so low!!!

Sends Shivers down spine when i switch on any of the news channels and see the headless bodies drenched in blood and the loved one's crying loud in the mortuary of osmania. This is an act of cowardice and atrocity.

what lies in our hands next?
a joint hunt from both central and state governments to catch the convicted?
and lately realise that the cheif operative is some terrorist outfit residing in our very friendly neighbour pak and been funded by ISI.
thereafter blame pakistan in pressmeets, election campaigns, independence day/republic day speeches?

If we were to concentrate on chopping of the branches, healthy roots still persist and thereby leads again to such brutal, unethical, antisocial branches..

Attack the root in pak and we have a permanent remedy!!

These are the worst things these people can do when the want to prove something. Killing innocent people. What do they gain by such things.. Terrible people..

The Blast scenes on the TV are scary i cant imagine people who have undergone this..........

TV channels are waste instead of providing information, discussions and things to be done they concentrate on the BLOODY Scenes and show them again and again coverage on BBC and NDTV are better

Gautam, thanks for the quick post and update of the events. It's always great to hear first-hand accounts of the feeling. I agree it's a travesty when we can't help those in need. Mobbing after an event is bad everywhere, but particularly acute in Hyd/Sec area. Please keep us posted of your thoughts and experiences. It certainly helps those of us from Hyd but no longer live there. --

I have visited Lumbini Park & enjoyed the greenery over looking the lake many times. I have also eaten at Gokul Chaat among other places in Koti.

I may no longer be in Hyderabad, but I can remember the locations all clearly in my mind. Unfortunately these happy images of these places are now replaced by the blood stained versions being shown on tv.

Why do we allow terrorism of this nature to happen at all when the only people who suffer are innocent bystanders ?

Completely distraught & may not be making sense right now :(

Hyderabad is a place I call home. Though there were some blasts before, all of them were of a low intensity nature but this is the first time such a large scale attack has taken place. The death toll has crossed 40, seems to rise every minute and they have discovered two unexploded bombs at Dilsukhnagar (which is about 3-4 KM from Koti), one inside a movie theatre.

A friend of mine had to go to the book stores near Gokul Chat and buy some books for me. Fortunately, it was raining, traffic was heavy when he entered Koti and his car's brakes had a problem. It was getting late and he thought its better to return tomorrow and turned around. Otherwise, he'd have been right there where the bomb had exploded. What luck!

Aaman,

About 5 to 6 KM. Lumbini Park is on NTR Marg right beside the AP Secretariat and Koti (where Gokul Chat is present) is a heavily crowded market place similar to Karol Bagh in Delhi.

This is bad news. Its so unfair that innocent people have to suffer and even more their loved ones.

Hyderabad is such a beautiful place and the people are nice, what did they do to deserve this? How can anyone be so desperate and blind to kill ordinary people for no fault of theirs. Nothing makes sense.

What can be the political motives? Any answers?

Too early to speculate dont you think?

And this time, no blaming ISI, Pakistan and "foreign elements"!

We want a thorough investigation and we want to KNOW just who the hell these guys are, how they look like, their names, their biographies, everything! We want to know who did July 11, 2006 and we want to know who did Mecca Masjid. No lame excuses. The Congress Party is playing games with people and keeping them in the dark.

The uncertainly in life has taken new heights. Now no part of the world seems safe. Do those who do such acts realize the pain? If it is a revenge for any pain they had before, then it is even a bigger crime to make innocents suffer after fully knowing what that suffering is.

We all got one life to live, and you got one chance to prove that it was worth being born. The only way to prove that, is by wiping the tears of others, not giving them tears.

Whoever planted the bombs did their homework really well, gokul chat is one of the densely occupied places in the heart of hyderabad where u can find people almost at any time.
Whether the attack is terrorist related or politically motivated the fact is that innocent people irrespective of caste, creed and religion have died. Its the responsibility of the government and every citizen of hyderabad & India to make sure that the real culprits are identified and justice is done.

Even I don't have any right to talk like this as I am not doing any thing for my city/ state/ country.. I am useless and worthless...

Gokul chaathouse is to me synonymous with the common man, woman and child of Hyderabad. A typical middle-class citizen. Any Hyderabadi could have been there on Saturday. You, me. We could have been there with friends. We could have been there with family.
It's just a matter of chance who was there and who wasn't.

Lumbini park too is a place where you and I would go with family.

Whoever is behind this, really meant to cause maximum damage.

For the families suffering in this tragedy, nothing will be the same again.

It is important - that not only are the real culprits identified, but the whole network of whoever is behind it be exposed. And then, further measures must be taken to prevent this happening in the future.

I completely agree with the initial post by Gautam about people not giving way to an ambulance. Like in other countries we need to have clear traffic regulations and severe penalties for not doing this. Living in the US when I see the traffic on both sides of the road stopping and coming to the side for an ambulance it makes me wish we had the same thing in my own country.

When the blast occured i was in ameerpet and 3 ambulances were stuck there in the traffic and the traffic policeman ther wasn't helping either.i think it is common sense to let an ambulance go thru a signal. The driver was screaming to let him pass, ther were others on the road tellin the policeman but the policeman wasn't listenin. he delayed the ambulance by around 8 min. The bus in which i was travelling took arnd 10 min to get out of the traffic jam the ambulance took 8 min, the 2 min saved wer largely due to the driving skills of the ambulance guy and some people ready to let him go

A policeman in this society doesn't have the common sense not to stop an ambulance.

Hi,
I just came across ur blog and found it very interesting. In response to ur article "MBA admission interviews – A view from the other side " I wud like to comment but was forced to rite it here else u may not read.I m also an MBA aspirant btw.It was a nice article but I disagree with u that all students r giving trite answers to common questions n their is nothing knew.Well I have participated in a lot of GD's & interviews and also got through IIFT(till interview stage) and IIT Kharagpur and can assure u that the people who get through are far better than the people as you described .The yhave innovative and aboriginal solutions ,clear career paths and a natural way of doing things.Although the basic remains same. And thus they are the ones who get selected finally,be it GD or an interview. Its just one has to identify them. Also GD is one of the most interesting and innovation mechanism of selecting(rather eliminating) students devised and cannot be boring at all.

ATTENTION TO ALL HINDUS: MUKHYA PRAKATANA
I was one of those Hindus who thought that tales of Indian Muslims cheering the Pakistani cricket team were exaggerations and like most Hindus(who are passive), I lamented when I would read about the partition of India in the history books.
That innocence came to an end in 1994 when I was 20 years old. My Hindu sisters and brothers please listen to what I am about to tell you. Not a word of what I am about to say is an exaggeration.
I am an American born Hindu. I studied in the Philippines(a country located between Indonesia and Taiwan). I studied with many Muslims from different countries including Indian Muslims (and Pakistanis). Keep in mind my parents are from rural South India and thusly never dealt with Muslims. Therefore they NEVER taught me one bad thing about Muslims and in fact they admired their dress and culture. My parents however had lots of Tamil Christian friends and thought of them as our own family. In other words we were typical Hindus. What I am about to tell you is based on my experiences in the Philippines with Muslims.
The loyalty of Indian Muslims is with the Ummah (World Wide Muslim community). There were 3 Hyderabadi Muslim brothers who studied with me. The 3 Hyderabadi muslim brothers and myself all grew up in the U.S.. I looked at them as fellow Indo-Americans. I quickly found out that they had no such feeling. BEING INDIAN WAS NOT AN IDENTITY MARKER FOR THEM. In the Philippines they quickly gravitated towards other Middle Eastern and Pakistani Muslims. Once when we were in Pizza Hut in Manila(the capital of the Philippines)I asked them a hypothetical question about weather their relatives in India would fight for India against Pakistan at a time of War. They openly told me that their father and uncles would not fight against Pakistan. Keep in mind these Hyderabadi brothers were brought up in the U.S. The eldest came at the age of 4 to the United States and the youngest was born in the United States. Despite being born and brought up in the United States their Islamic identity was not diluted one bit and they had fervant Islamic loyalty. Can we Hindus say the same.
I must however say some of the nicest people I met in the Philippines were Pakistanis (NOT INDIAN MUSLIMS NOT INDIAN MUSLIMS). This is probably because they don't have the same identity issues as an Indian Muslims. My roomate was a Hindko speaking Pakistani from the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. He was one of my best friends. My Pakistani roomate, before he became my roomate, was roommates with an Indian Muslim. Anyway my Pakistani roomate used to love watching Indian channels such as the Sony channel. But once during an interview with A.R Rahman. My roomate said: "that ofcourse A.R RAHMAN wants to say Pakistan Zindabad" but he can't since he lives in India. When I responded that: "In that case Hindus have the right to be angry with Indian Muslims". He responded in a sympathetic tone that:" What can Hindus and Indian Muslims do? They must get along since they live with each other" He was probably right. But still it was distressing to know that 15% of India's population were potentially disloyal. Because my roomate was one my best friends and because he viewed me as American rather than Hindu he was open with me. He said that all Muslims look upon each other as brothers because this was an intrinsic precept of their religion weather they state it publicly or not.
In an other incident. A new Bihari Muslim came to our school. He was welcomed with open arms by a Delhi born Hindu classmate of mine. I became a little jealous because I felt this gracious welcome was because of the common Hindi language which they shared(I speak Telugu). However the Bihari Muslim quickly gravitated towards the Pakistanis. My Delhi Hindu friend felt betryed. PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS NEXT INCIDENT INVOLVING THE SAME BIHARI MUSLIM. Once a Pakistani and an Indian Muslim had a dispute. My Hindu Delhi friend had a dispute with SAME Indian Muslim. This Bihari Muslim stepped in and settled the dispute between the Pakistani and Indian Muslim and said: "It dosen't matter if Irfan(the Indian Muslim) and Sharma(the Delhi Hindu)don't get along but it is important that Irfan (the Indian Muslim) and Zada (the Pakistani Muslim)get along since they are both Muslim brothers. Here you have a Bihari Muslim determined to make peace between an Indian Muslim and Pakistani Muslim but he is not concerned that an Indian Hindu and Indian Muslim are quarreling. I know this since my best friend, who is an Iranian muslim, witnessed this event and told me.
Here is more info. There are Philippino Muslims concentrated in the Southern Philippines who want to form a seprate country, claiming they are oppressed by the Philippino Christian majority. This is a ridiculous claim since Philippinos are the most passive and least nationalistic people you'll ever meet. Anyway these Philippino Muslims are waging a viscious terror campaign of putting bombs in Philippine cities. As soon as new Muslims students come to my school from America, Pakistan, Middle East or whereever they immediatly sympathize with Philipino Muslims EVEN BEFORE FINDING OUT WHAT THE CONFLICT IS ABOUT.. In fact while I was there, around 1996, the Philippine Government banned new Pakistani Students from studying in the Philppines because so many were arrested helping Philippino Muslim Jihadi groups such as Abu Sayyaf And the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. Hindus have no such reflexive sympathy for Hindus in Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Nepal, Guyana or wherever.
Muslims are especially bold when they are the majority in a social setting. I frequently attended social gatherings in the Philipines where the majority were muslims. Once, in such a gathering, a Palestinian, who I thought upto that point, was fairly secular openly told a couple of Hyderabadi Muslims:"You know why your great? Because your Muslim and that makes you great". Even if this were true he made this comment in front of me and my older cousin, who were by that time, used to such Muslim chauvanism.
Whenever I saw any two Pakistanis meet each other in the Philippines they woulds Aslam Walekum and Hug each other even if the never met before. Do Hindus have even a fraction of this unity?
The worse Muslim (or should I say most truthful) that I met in the Philippines was from Sudan and I will admit we partied a lot together. He was an unbashed Muslim Fascist who supported every Muslim cause in the world from Palestine to Kashmir and Chechnya. He was taught in the Sudanese Army that the World was divided into a sphere of peace(the Muslim countries) and a sphere of War (the Non Muslim countries) upon whom the Islamic world will eventually wage war. This is because in every Muslim country they are taught ISLAMIYAAT(Islamic studies). Even in "democracies" like Pakistan and Afghanistan this is taught. Yet we hindus are not taught Hindutvam. Please listen to me. There are to many experiences I had with Muslims to discuss here.
I had a Malyali Christian friend who studied in J.S.S medical college in Mysore, Karnataka. He studied with an Indian Muslim brought up in California, U.S.A. named Shaema Khan. This Shaema Khan said that Muslims around the world had to unite and conquer the world. He felt comfortable saying this to a Christian. He would dare not say this to a Hindu. Can you honestly tell me that Hindus have the same spirit as this Muslim kid from California. Once when I was in the Philippines I was listening to B.B.C Radio. They were doing a story about Indian Muslims because India's 50th Independence anniversery was approaching. The story focused on a Shia Muslim family from Uttar Pradesh. AND YES THIS DAMN SHIA MUSLIM FAMILY WOULD CHEER FOR PAKISTAN DURING CRICKET MATCHES. They felt safe admitting this to the B.B.C Radio since their real names were withheld and since it was radio and their faces can't be seen.
Notice that even Muslim stars such as that Muslim tennis player from Hyderabad by the name Mirza when to Islamic schools and instead of the genral Indian schools that most Hindus go to. I am telling all my innocent Andhra brothers and sisters to stop cheering her on. She in heart does not consider herself to be Bharatiya let alone an Andhra. I know you wish what I was saying was not true.
When Pakistan did their nuclear tests in 1998 there were celebrations in Islamic capitals such as Baghdad. With whom do you think the sympathy of Palestinains is with when it comes to the Indo-Pak conflict. India and Indians have supported the Palastinian cause. But I can tell you first hand that the Palestinans have no such sympathy toward India. I met many Palestinain students in the Philippines and they mentioned Kashmir a lot. Indian security forces have repeatedly arrested Saudis, Yemenis, Sudanese, Algerians, Kuwaitis, Afghans etc. fighting Jihad against India in Kashmir. There are many more stories I can tell you but it would take up so much space. Don't believe what I am saying blindly and don't listen to what anybody says blindly. Go and become real friends with a Muslim and you will be betrayed. Not superfical friends. No instead get really close. Suddenly behind your back they will go to the movies and not invite you. Only the Muslim friends wereinvited.
Pretend as if you are an atheist and not patriotic toward India and then the Muslim will confide in you and share his or her true feelings. I am from New York City. After the September the 11th attacks in America, I went to Muslim merchants in New York City and greeted them with an "Aslam Walekum" pretending to be Muslim. Believe me they were elated at the events of 9/11. The dummies didn't understand thet America was about to inflict massive revenge on the Muslims. I call on all Hindus living abroad to do this. Pretend to be Muslim and you'll be able to ellicit the true feelings of some Muslim cab driver or merchant and plus you might even get a discount. Then you will see the truth. Most of you Hindus won't do this because your afraid to find out that I am right.
IN THIS WORLD THERE ARE JAPANESE, AMERICANS, FRENCH etc. BUT THERE ARE NO PEOPLE CALLED INDIANS. THERE ARE ONLY HINDUS AND MUSLIMS. YOU CAN GO ON PRETENDING THAT YOUR MUSLIM NEIGHBOR IS BENIGN AND LOYAL TO INDIA. ONLY HINDUS ARE PROUD TO CONSIDER THEMSELVES BHARATIYAS. WE ARE VAIDIKAS NO MATTER THE CASTE OR TRIBE. NO MUSLIM IS PROUD TO BE A BHARATIYA. YOU CAN TALK ABOUT INDIA'S BOOMING ECONOMY ALL YOU WANT. BUT WITHIN A CENTURY THE FRUITS OF THAT BOOM WILL BE ENJOYED BY MUSLIMS BECAUSE OF THEIR MUCH HIGHER BIRTH RATE. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY HINDUS ARE DIVIDED BY LANGUAGE AND EVEN CASTE. SO EVEN IF MUSLIMS DON'T FORM A MAJORITY WITHIN A CENTURY THEY'LL WILL BE A PLURALTY. THAT MEANS THEY WILL BE THE SINGLE BIGGEST ETHNO-DEMOGRAPHIC POPULATION COHORT. YOU CAN ACT LIKE YOUR ASHAMED OF BAL THAKERY AND NARENDRA MODI AND NATHURAM GODSE BUT YOU KNOW DEEP DOWN INSIDE WHAT THEY HAVE SAID IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH. SOUTH INDIANS NEED TO READ THEIR HISTORY AS WELL. READ ABOUT THE GREATNESS OF VIJAYANAGARAM AND HOW IT ENDED. READ ABOUT HOW ANTI-CASTE HINDU SAINTS SUCH AS SRIMAT PILLAI LOKACHARYA DIED. READ ABOUT THE SACKING OF SO MANY SOUTH INDIAN TEMPLES SUCH AS SRI RANGAM. READ ABOUT HOW HINDUS WERE TREATED UNDER THE NIZAM OF HYDERABAD.
WHO PERSECUTED SRIMAT CHAITANYA MAHAPRABHUJI. YOUR BLOOD WILL BOIL WHEN YOU READ THESE THINGS AND IT NEEDS TO BOIL. AS FOR MY NORTH INDIAN HINDU BROTHERS AND SISTERS, MANY OF YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW MUSLIMS ARE. TO ALL MY HINDU BROTHERS AND SISTERS IF YOU SEE A FELLOW HINDU BEGGING GIVE A LITTLE EXTRA. IF YOU CAN GIVE A JOB OR CONTRACT TO SOMEONE MAKE SURE YOU DON'T GIVE TO A NON HINDU (BUT SIKHS ARE OK TOO) AND FOR THE LOVE OF BHAGAVAN DON'T WASTE YOUR ENERGY HELPING NON HINDUS SUCH AS SANJAY DUTT(TRUST ME HIS MUSLIM MOM WOULD HAVE RAISED HIM ISLAMIC)AND SALMAN KHAN GET OUT OF JAIL.
JAI SHRI BHARATADESHA!
